WATER FILTER TRAINING AND DELIVERY
Water.
Water easily drawn from the tap - on demand - and to custom temperature here in the first world.
In Guatemala, clean water is a luxury.
1 in 4 people in Guatemala have access to clean water
9 out of 10 water sources are contaminated
The water at the school and in the community of Chiquimula that Shusho Abajo is located is contaminated. Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity offered the perfect opportunity to help. Thanks yo your generosity, we raised enough to provide 100 filters for this community.
To avoid paternalism, Habitat for Humanity has a great policy where the families must sign up, attend the proper training, and commit to purchasing the filters through Habitat for a low cost. This allows the families to have “buy-in” into the program and feel the dignity of being partnered with instead of “handed out”. If they do not do these steps, they do not receive a water filter.
Prior to our arrival, Habitat identified 30 families who would make this commitment. When the day came for delivery, 26 families had completed the training and would be receiving the filters.
So beautiful to see the training, delivery, and resting in the knowledge that 26 families now would have clean water both at school and at home.
The remaining funds will be used to provide water filters for families living in extreme poverty who will be able to attend the training and will have to show the initiative for the filters but not the financial commitment. We will continue to work with Habitat for Humanity Guatemala to identify these families and provide these filters.
